Ambassador Lawrence Olufemi Obisakin assumed duty as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Benin on 6th August 2012 when he presented his letters of Credence to His Excellency Dr. Boni Yayi, President of the Republic of Benin, Head of State and Government. He had arrived Cotonou on Monday 9th July, 2012.
Before this appointment, Ambassador Obisakin was the director of the Foreign Service Inspectorate division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, from Feb 2011.
He had served as the Minister in charge of the First Committee (Disarmament and International Peace and Security) of the United Nations in the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN, in New York from 2007 to 2011. During this period, he was equally the chairman of the African Group of the First Committee at the UN.
Ambassador Obisakin joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in August, 1981. He is an extremely versatile Nigerian career diplomat. He is a linguist by training and a polyglot, a philologist, versatile in 12 languages of which he interprets five.
In his diplomatic career of 31 years, he has served in Switzerland, Brazil, Israel, United Nations and currently Benin Republic. He has been on Nigerian delegation to many International, bilateral and multilateral conferences in Africa, Europe, North and South Americas and Asia.
At headquarters he had served among others, in departments of: Protocol, Administration, Inspectorate etc. He was director of State protocol and personal Interpreter to former President Olusegun Obasanjo from 2003-2007. He is Also a bi vocational pastor by calling.
Ambassador Lawrence Obisakin graduated from the then University of Ife, (Now Obafemi Awolowo Univeristy, Ile-Ife) BA French in 1980, DSDF Université de Grenoble, France, 1979, Foreign Service Academy of Nigeria, 1983,BBA International Trade, Brasilia, 1994; MA, Trinity College and Seminary, Indiana,(Biblical Leadership/Ministry (Conflict Management concentration) 2011; PhD.

Born 27 Feb, 1957 at Ile-Ife, Nigeria he is married to Pastor Cecilia Gbemisola and they have four adult children.
