God the Holy Spirit

TEXT: Isaiah 5:1-7; Acts 2:1-7, Gal 5:16-26

Sing… let the living waters flow over my soul… let the Holy Spirit come and take control…of every situation that has troubled my life…

Main texts Isa 5 and Gal 5

Isa 5:1 “Now will I sing to my well beloved,…” These are the words of the Prophet Isaiah, about the state and condition of the people of Israel by way of parable, which he calls a song, and which he determines to sing to his beloved, and calls upon himself to do it; by whom he means either God the Father, whom he loved with all his heart and soul; or Christ, who is often called the beloved of his people, especially in the book of Solomon’s song; or else the people of Israel, whom the prophet had a great affection for, being his own people; but it seems best to understand it as God or Christ.

Gal 5:24    “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.” Gal 5:25    “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Gal 5:22    “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,” Gal 5:23    “Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

Mat 3:10    “And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”

Joh 15:8    “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.”

Mat 5:16    “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Good fruits attract good fruits. Simeon first found his brother, John 1:40    One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. John 1:41    “He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.”

Mat 7:16    “Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?” Mat 7:17    “Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.” Mat 7:18    “A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.” Mat 7:19    “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.” Mat 7:20    “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

1Co 3:14    “If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.”

1Co 3:15    “If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

Gal 6:7    “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Gal 6:8    “For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”

Heb 12:11    “Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”

Rev 22:12    “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”

Rev 22:13    “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”

The theme of our convention is the Holy Spirit. Last Tuesday at Digging Deep we studied, Holy Living, the Spirit of Holiness.

We are running a programme on Him

1. Who is the Holy Spirit?

Spiritual power is a proper longing for God’s people and all agree that it relates to the work of the Holy Spirit. While a Christian is one who has received Jesus Christ, a spiritual Christian is one who displays Christ living through his life.

Spirituality then, is Christlikeness which is produced by the fruit of the Spirit. See Gal. 5: 22-23.

The body of Christ especially the one that began on Pentecost has benefited most from the ministries of the spirit.

His presence in the lives of believers is the earnest or seal of the everlasting character of their redemption. Eph 1:1-12.

The practical and important problem of relationships to other believers is to be guided and guarded by the principles of “being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace”. See Eph. 4: 3.

There are no magic formulae for spiritual power, instead such is as available as water.

Finally on spiritual power quest, we may not need to have more of him but rather we desperately need to know more of Him and with this knowledge comes added faith, power, and control in our lives.

The truth of the personality of the Holy spirit,(as to He, not it) is of crucial importance because to deny it is to deny His real existence of the Trinity and the teaching of the scriptures.

The Church Council Filioque meaning “and the Son”

Filioque is a Latin word meaning “and the Son” which was added to the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed by the Church of Rome in the 11th century, one of the major factors leading to the Great Schism between East and West. This inclusion in the Creedal article regarding the Holy Spirit thus states that the Spirit “proceeds from the Father and the Son.”

Its inclusion in the Creed is a violation of the canons of the Third Ecumenical Council in 431, which forbade and anathematized any additions to the Creed, a prohibition which was reiterated at the Eighth Ecumenical Council in 879-880. This word was not included by the Council of Nicea nor of Constantinople. The term itself has been interpreted in both an Orthodox fashion and a heterodox fashion. It may be read as saying that the Spirit proceeds from the Father through (dia) the Son. This was the position of St Maximus the Confessor. On this reading, the Son is not an eternal cause (aition) of the Spirit. The heterodox reading sees the Son, along with the Father, as an eternal cause of the Spirit. Most in the Orthodox Church consider this latter reading to be a heresy.- from   http://orthodoxwiki.org/Filioque- accessed Sat 23/8/14

All was not settled by the Nicene council. Macedoin bishop maintained that the Spirit was a creature and were labelled `pneumatomachains` while the mainstream orthodox insisted that the Holy spirit was divine otherwise the Son was not. The controversy grew so much that Emperor Theodosius had to call a council at Constantinople.

Augustine (354-430) in the work of Augustin, the concept of Trinity reached its final formulation in the Western church. He also laid agreat emphasis on the efficacious grace as the work of the spirit

The council of Chalcedon (451) representing the Seas of Rome, Constantinople, Antioch and Jerusalem, confirmed the decisions of Nicea and Constantinople.

The synod of Toledo. (589) The western Theologians added the Constantinople creed, famous clause, `filioque` (ànd the son`). This became the confessional ground for the split between the Eastern and Western churches that continues to this day. The book by Charles Ryrie also reviewed the views of Thomas Aquinas (1221-1274).

He submitted that before, the church had focused its studies on the person of the Holy Spirit but in the Reformation (1517) of Martin Luther, tattention was given to the works of the Spirit. The reformers also laid emphasis on: the need of illumination by the spirit, justification by faith which caused them to say much about the Spirit`s works. Charles Ryrie also reviewed the following:

The Socinians were excesses that follow every religious movement. They denied that the persons of the Trinity possessed any.

In my book,‘God the Holy Spirit the Mystery of Christianity’ I listed and analysed 10 Emblems. Here are six emblems of the Holy Spirit thus:

  1. The Dove, Matt. 3:16, Gen 8:8-11.
  2.  Water. Jn 7:38-39. 3, Ps 46:4.
  3. Oil. Num 11:8, Lk 4:18, matt 25:3-5.
  4. Seal. Eph 1:20, Jhn 6:37, Rev 7:2-8
  5. Wind. Jhn 3:8, Acts 2:1, Ezek 37:9-11.
  6. Fire. Exod. 3:2, Acts 2:3.

Those He used for His service, Moses, Bezalel such as: Even Saul, Gideon Elijah, Elisha

These are as follows:

He gave life to the creation. See Job 27:3 ,Job 27:3    All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;

Psalm 104:30, John 6:63.

He gave order to creation. Job 26:13.

He adorned the creation. Job 26:13, Ps 33:6.

He preserves the creation. Heb 1:3

Heb 1:3    “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”

Moses so close a relationship with Gid. God always an ear shot away as in: Num 9:8   “And Moses said unto them, Stand still, and I will hear what the LORD will command concerning you.”

Num 9:9    And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Bezalel to build the tabernacle yo fi vibe taste as in, Exo 31:1    “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,” Exo 31:2    “See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah:” Exo 31:3    “And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,”

The Webster Dictionary defines a fruit as follows:  a usually sweet food (such as a blueberry, orange, or apple) that grows on a tree or bush; the part of a plant that has the seeds in it (such as the pod of a pea, a nut, a grain, or a berry); a result or reward that comes from some action or activity

Need to bear fruit. Live Gal 5:22-23. See, Gal 5:22    “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,” Gal 5:23    “Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

Fruit of d Spirit are attributes of Christ. Christlikeness

The scriptures have revealed that the Holy Spirit was largely involved in the earthly ministry of our Lord Jesus.

Some of the involvements of the Holy Spirit include:

Agent of the virgin birth. Lk 1:35, Heb 2:14

In the life of Christ, in terms of anointing, Lk 4:18-19 which marked him off as the Messiah, Acts 4:27, Heb 1:9. Christ was filled with the spirit as in Lk 4;1

Sealed, for divine approval of the Father, with the Spirit as in Jn 6:27

Led by the Spirit, a sin Lk 4:1. Jn 8:29, rejoiced in the Sprit, Lk 10:21 empowered by the Spirit.

Although Christ did not always have to perform miracles in the power of the Spirit, he did so on certain occasi

C.  The discovery of one’s spiritual gift.

1.  Study. Gifts of the spirit as revealed in the Bible found in 1 Cor 12, Rom 12,Eph 4:4-15 Rom 12:, 1Pet 4:4. Know attributes of those men in the Zbible who exemplified the gifts. Also today those who have them.

2.  Desire.the areas of ministry that we have pleasure in may be an indication

3.  Ability. Discovering an ability. Even though before salvation there might have been no such ability at all. Ability improves ET practice. Paul exhorted a Timothy in 2Tim 1:6 to stir up the gifts. Rom 15:19. Ministering in the gift will be accompanied with blessing. Be patient it takes time to discover yr spiritual gift as Gid is not in a hurry.

4.  Ask God. As Solomon did as in 1Kgs 3:5-12. He said am a little child but give me wisdom, 1Cor 12:31 covet the spiritual gifts, i.e. seek God’s will

2Ch 9:19    “And twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other upon the six steps. There was not the like made in any kingdom.” 2Ch 9:20    “And all the drinking vessels of king Solomon were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold: none were of silver; it was not any thing accounted of in the days of Solomon…” 2Ch 9:21    “For the king’s ships went to Tarshish with the servants of Huram: every three years once came the ships of Tarshish bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.”

Pro 25:1    “These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.” Pro 25:2    “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.” Pro 25:3    “The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.”

1Ki 10:27    “And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycomore trees that are in the vale, for abundance.” 1Ki 10:28    “And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king’s merchants received the linen yarn at a price.”

5.  Ask a mature Christian. Who knows u well what he thinks yr spiritual gifts are

6.  Take part in different church ministries.as opportunities present thrmselves

The purpose of spiritual gifts

To glorify the Father Ps 34:3Psa 34:3    O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. Ps 69:30. Rev 4:11Rev 4:11    Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

1.  To glorify the Father

2.  To edify the church.to build up.

1Cor 14:121Co 14:12    Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.Eph 4:11    And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Eph 4:12    For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

E.  The abuse of the spiritual gifts

1.  Not using those gifts imparted to us

1Tim 4:14 Payl wrote to a young pastor converted by him 1Ti 4:14    Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

2 2Ti 1:6    Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

JESUS BORN OF SPIRIT,  led of him,  raised of Him in Rom 8:11Rom 8:11    But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

The purpose of the fruit of the spirit

                        1.  Magnify the Lord Jesus Christ.it hives testimony to d transformed life Ps 29: .. Beauty of holiness… Action speaks louder than voice or what you do is so loud that I cannot hear what u are saying. Others will. Job 36:24… Men behold… Ps 24:3…men see fruits …  Only as d Saviour is exalted that men are drawn to Him. .. I found no fault in Him. Jesus said in Jn 12:32 if I be lifted up giving his life to us

Nobody will believe our sermons or declaration until we do so in our life.the more of his fruits or goodness we reflect the more people will believe us.

                        2.  Give testimony to the transformed life. Result of trusting Christ.. It is unfortunate that an over emphasis on the gifts have led to the neglect of tge graces or fruits of tge HS. Building Christ

Ian character must take precedence over displaying specIal ability Dr C. I Scopio says it us not legal correctness but the possession and manifestation of 9 graces as follows:

Gal 5:22    But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, and peace, character as to inward grace

longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, character as yo outward

faith, Gal 5:23    Meekness, temperance: chapter in expression towards God.

Taken together they represent the moral portrait of Christ as in Gal 2:20… Not I but Christ…… Possible because of the brliever’s vital union to Christ… Jhn 15:5 & 1 Cor 12:12-13. Yield to HS.

Against such there is no law.

                        3.  Show the work of God in believers’ life

            E.  The presentation of the fruit of the spirit

Privilege of all believers to have d fruits of d Spirit manifested in their life… Presence of Zgod will enable us facilitate tge fruits in our life In Gal 5:22-23, we find d attributes of d fruit of d HS listed for our examination .now 9 is d no for fruit bearing.abraham bore fruit at 99 yrs, in KJV is 1611= 1+6+1+1=9. Gal is 9th book of fruits. 1Pet 1:23 born of incorruptible tree

1.  Nine is the number for fruit bearing

2.  By their fruits shall ye know them.

Warren Wisby characteristics expected of us are seen in d 9 fold fruit of d Spirit. All others are outgrowth of love… giving Col 3:14… Above all put on charity… Package of love… Attributes fr life of Prov 20:11.. Child known by his doing… By observations.   All believers are to be fruit inspectors. Matt 7:15… not to go judging of genres but discern whether u walk in spirit.. You may not tell a book by its cover but you can a

Ways tell a tree by its fruits.
