The dialectic of praise
R.C. Sproul says,CHAPTER 2 THE GOAL OF CHRISTIAN LIVING I once read the following definition of a fanatic: “A fanatic is a person who, having lost sight of his goal, redoubles his effort to get there.” The fanatic runs around frantically getting nowhere. He or she is a basketball player without a basket, a tennis player without a net, a golfer without a green. For Christians to make progress in sanctification, in learning to please God, they must have a clear idea of their goal. Though the Bible makes that goal clear, it is one that is easily forgotten. What is the goal? Jesus stated it this way: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matt. 6: 33).- Pleasing God..Discovering the meaning and importance of Sanctification.
Charles Ryrie in Basic theology says, THE WORSHIP OF THE CHURCH I. THE MEANING OF WORSHIP A. The Words Involved 1. Proskuneō. This primary word for worship is connected with the idea of kissing (as kissing the earth to honor the deities of the earth); it came to connote prostrating oneself in reverence. This showed that the worshiper considered the object worthy of whatever he was offering. Even the English word “worship” (a shortened form of “worthship”) means to attribute worth to the object worshiped. Our Lord used this word in His classic statement on worship in John 4:24. In relation to the church the word occurs only in 1 Corinthians 14:25 and refers there to the worship of an unbeliever who comes into the assembly.
Still Ryrie says, The Concept The worship of the church, then, consists of individual, corporate, public, and private service for the Lord, which is generated by a reverence for and submission to Him who is totally worthy.

II. THE CHARACTER OF WORSHIP (JOHN 4:24) Our Lord revealed two basics about true worship when He declared it must be in spirit and in truth. “In spirit” includes three things about the center of worship. (1) Worship can and should take place anywhere and everywhere since spirit is not confined to a particular place or time. (2) Worship comes from man’s spirit (Heb. 4:12). It is no mere surface ritual. (3) True worship is a person-to-Person experience, honoring with our spirit God who was revealed through the Lord Jesus at all times and in all places. “In truth” means that the character of true worship must be genuine and without pretense. God hates insincere worship (Isa. 1:10–17; Mal. 1:7–14; Matt. 15:8–9).

Singing The New Testament exhorts both private and public singing as a facet of worship. When one is happy he should sing (James 5:13). Paul and Silas sang hymns of praise in jail (Acts 16:25). Singing was part of corporate worship as well (1 Cor. 14:26, this was likely a solo; Col. 3:16). Though distinctions have been made between psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, they cannot be held rigidly. Psalms possibly refers to Old Testament psalms, though perhaps with Christians’ additions. Hymns may be praises directed to God (yet might include using the psalms, Acts 16:25).
• What is praise? Adoration. From Latin, ADORAR…TO LOVE to the point of speaking of, praising a bring
• Can you praise that or who you love not? PRAISE is etymologically from price,mot vakue. It is an expression of love…David says, I will praise you Psa 63:3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
• Earlier he says his soul thirsts for God…
• In Hebrew,praise occurs 248 times in the Old Testament.. The first occurrence…Gen 29:35 And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing….in Hebrew, ידה, yâdâh,yaw-daw’,A primitive root; used only as denominative from H3027; literally to use (that is, hold out) the hand; physically to throw (a stone, an arrow) at or away; especially to revere or worship (with extended hands); intensively to bemoan (by wringing the hands): – cast (out), (make) confess (-ion), praise, shoot, (give) thank (-ful, -s, -sgiving).
• In the New Testament…the w ord praise, occurs 29 times. The first occurrence in the NT is, αἶνος, ainos,ah’ee-nos,Apparently a primary word; properly a story, but used in the sense of G1868; praise (of God): – praise.
• In Greek…..essentially, the second occurrence is etymologically in Greek, G2127 (Strong), εὐλογέω, eulogeō,yoo-log-eh’-o,From a compound of G2095 and G3056; to speak well of, that is, (religiously) to bless (thank or invoke a benediction upon, prosper): – bless, praise.
• The other occurrence in NT uses the word, G136 (Strong), αἶνος,mainos, ah’ee-nos,Apparently a primary word; properly a story, but used in the sense of G1868; praise (of God): – praise.
• In Yoruba we ‘yin’…ie. Shoot the praise.. Alsog ‘kii’…to charge somebody..fill him pack him with praise
• Why praise?
• From the etymological analysis above, to praise God also implies:
o expression of love for God
o A way of expressing appreciation of God, his grace and provisions to us.
o A mark of devotion to God
o An act or art of worship… Such as Paul and Silas in Acts 16:25-26. So it can bring to your troubled sea, the war ship of God.
o Building a habitation for God; Psa 22:3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel…John Gill comments thus, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel; either the place where Israel offered the sacrifices of praise to God, the tabernacle or temple, the house of prayer and praise in which Jehovah dwelt: or the true Israel of God praising him, who are formed for himself, and called by his grace to show forth his praises; among whom he takes up his residence: or else the praises themselves; and so the phrase denotes God’s gracious acceptance of them
o is a double edged sword, that’s what sealed the womb of Muchaiah Psa 149:3 Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
o Psa 149:4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
o Psa 149:5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
o Psa 149:6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
o executes judgement Psa 149:7 To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
o binds kings Psa 149:8 To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
o Psa 149:9 To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.
o Invitation to God to perform
• Psa 106:1 Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

NOW, SEVEN EXPLOITS OF PRAISE.

1. Sing his triumph as Moses,thus, Exo 15:1 Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
2. The wall of Jerucho fell at the shout if praise…Josh 6:13-20
3. Hezekiah’s song..praise ye the Lord…2Ch 20:19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high. 2Ch 20:20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
4. The minstrel saved from death of thirst in the wilderness, 2Ki 3:16 And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches. 2Ki 3:17 For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
5. Act 16:25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.Act 16:26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
6. Celebration of God, the Lord, Mat 26:30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. Eph 5:18-19. Praise is an ode, a love doing onto the Lord..hymns
7. it is acceptance of worship that makes God real God, Rev 5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
8. In heaven , it’s praise galore..Rev 15:3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.
• You sing by inspiration, remember the minstrel at point no 4 above, who inspired Elisha to prophesy in the wilderness and thereby saved two kings from desert death?
o For his goodness..Psa 107:8 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
o Mighty acts…Psa 145:4 One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.
o His habitation
o We love him.
o To see his power,Psa 63:1 A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
o Psa 63:2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
o As prayers, see,Psalm 1, along with Psalms 19 and 119, is a torah-psalm, a psalm in which the concept of torah, “instruction” (NRSV “law”; see below) is preeminent (see Pss. 1: 2; 2; 19: 7; 119: 1, 18, 29, 34, 44, plus twenty more times in Ps. 119). The effect of treating Psalms 1, 19, and 119 last has been to relegate the concept of torah to one of minor significance in understanding the Psalms. 1
• How praise.? In spirit and in truth, Jhn 4:23-24. Joh 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
• I recall in 1978 December at Christmas Church service, we Africans from Nigeria and Madagascar, taught the church that dancing in the Church was biblical and was part of praising God. Psa 150:3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
• Psa 150:4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
• Early and continually. Read as follows:
• All times Psa 34:1 A Psalm of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed. I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
• Continually-
• Deliberate, determined, Psa 57:7 My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.
• Psa 57:8 Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.
• Psa 57:9 I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations. Psa 57:10 For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds. Psa 57:11 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth.
• Psa 150:6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.
• Finally this be done more openly, Act 26:26 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.

David was a great praise singer of God …2nd Samuel 23:1 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,

Only the living can Praise. Praising or worshiping is a soul matter. Animals may show appreciation but as they have no souls, so they cannot PRAISE God. only human brings or Angels and host of heaven can praise God. see, Luk 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Luk 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luk 2:15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

Psa 113:1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD.
Psa 113:2 Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore.
Psa 113:3 From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD’S name is to be praised.
Psa 113:4 The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.
Psa 113:5 Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high,
Psa 113:6 Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!

Challenge:

1. What do you know about praising or worshiping God?
2. Have you been praising God?
3. How can you praise God best?
4. Let us begin yo praise God, today
5. Pray for the gift of praise, today.
